Bio

Two major influencing factors in Pauls musical development were his somewhat aborted classical training alongside the fact that he is synaesthestic (Synesthesia: a neurologically-based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway). Pauls synesthesia is everywhere evident in his music and the album title is a direct reference to the colourful world of sound which Paul inhabits. Since he began writing orchestral scores in his teens Paul has been aware of the primary role that synaesthesia has played in his compositions. As he describes it himself its a feeling of knowing where things go in the overall arrangement. The songs on Hold Onto The Colours demonstrate this very special sensibility and play with the listeners ears in a way that is quite unique.Paul was also mentioned on Dr Victoria Williamson blog about synesthesia. The fact that Paul, in a sense, sees his songs gives them each a very individual and special quality. The album was written, produced, arranged & mixed by Paul himself and is packed with 12 songs each with there own world full of magical,happy,sad,uplifing,colouful,dark and vey original music.Its music of a 25 year old whose just trying to sound like himself and not interested in the new trends or copying anybody else.Its the sound of something new and fresh yet accessible.It was recorded in various places including Pulse Studios,(Dublin), Pauls own Studio and the Orchestra was recorded with the Malmo Symphonic Orchestra, Sweden. The range of instrumentation across the album is vast and includes; Wagner Tubas,Taiko Drums to Guitars,Strings,Pianos and much more. Most of the instruments are played by Paul, his primary instruments being piano,vocals and guitar. Also of note are great drum contributions from Johnny Boyle (The Frames). The album was mastered by John Astley (The Who and Abba amongst many others). If Paul was delighted to secure the mastering talents of such a legend this was equalled by his delight at James Marsh agreeing to design the albums artwork. James is most well known for his superb Talk Talk album sleeves. Talk Talk are without a doubt a major influence so it was a special moment for Paul when James came on board for this project. The artwork which James has designed for the album is quite special and individual while certainly in the Talk Talk tradition. The album as well as the associated posters are sure to catch peoples eyes as well as their ears. Pauls influence run a wide gamut from classical,rock,jazz,world music to rock,pop,experimental and what ever else catches his thoughts.. Paul likes to list his other influences as Rainbows ,Stars and Colours. Paul has toured both Poland and Ireland and a full set of dates will be announced around the album release.Most recently Paul made an impact at the 2010 and 2011 Electric Picnic festival where he was compared to Paddy McAloon I Trawl The Megahurtz,which is very fitting indeed.In 2010 he released "Miss You" which was meet with great reviews.2011 saw the release of "Summer In The Sand" to great reviews from various sites and blogs.Friction PR will look after publicity and will be servicing media. Harmless Noise

Summer In The Sand is actually a really interesting song,There are some great touches here: light vocals and the beats very simple but is used to full effect with flourishes of keys and a deadly guitar riff. He hasnt besmirched the name of Brian Wilson.

Miss You is so much better arranged and composed than 99% of the rest of music out there.The single from the young Irishman is made better by the fantastic soaring chorus, outdoing Chris Martins finest crescendos. Its a gorgeous track

The Metaphorical Boat

"Summer in the Sand" is the kind of unashamably pop songs that The Feeling used to churn out on a regular basis, mixed with Bloc Party-esque guitar on the chorus. It's also lovely to hear the Gershwins name-dropped as well.

Paul Melia seems to have a knack for producing fun, uncynical, enjoyable pop music, and long may it continue.
